Waxer Operator

Responsibilities

• Aid the Press Operator in mounting paper rolls onto the waxer machine using a chain hoist.
• Mix liquid wax with additives and adjust valves to control the temperature and melt the material.
• Start the waxing machine and fine-tune controls to manage paper feed, wax temperature, cooling rolls, or cold water baths, and paper tension.
• Weigh standard-size paper sheets both before and after coating to verify that the coating meets customer specifications.
• Cut samples of printed/coated materials from the end of the roll and inspect for imperfections.
• Clean waxer rollers, wax tanks, cooling cylinders, cold water bath tanks, and blending systems.
• Monitor and adjust mechanical operation and gauges to maintain specified operating levels and address malfunctions.
• Splice breaks in paper using tape, remove rewound rolls or sheets from the machine with a hoist, and pull shafts from cores by hand.
• Accomplish lifting tasks weighing up to or exceeding 100 lbs. with a partner.
• Weigh, label, and mark printed/coated rolls and move them to the slitter area.
• Retrieve and return ink drums to the press area or to ink storage rooms as needed.
• Clean the waxer and work area, maintain daily time, production, and material usage reports.
• Conform to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and adhere to Safe Quality Food (SQF) procedures and policies to ensure products are suitable for direct food contact.
• Inspect and report any product quality or food safety issues to the Quality Assurance Manager (SQF Practitioner), Management Team member, or lead person.

Qualifications

• Five or more years of hands-on experience operating a web-fed converting machine.
• Two years minimum experience as a coater helper or operator.
