About the Role
A federal construction contractor is seeking an experienced Superintendent / SSHO to lead field operations and oversee project safety on a major infrastructure project in a remote desert environment. This individual will be responsible for day-to-day construction execution, subcontractor coordination, schedule management, quality oversight, and implementation of the site safety program.
Responsibilities
- Construction Leadership
- Lead and supervise daily field operations and subcontractor activities.
- Plan and coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and construction sequencing.
- Oversee execution of work to ensure compliance with contract documents, drawings, specifications, and project schedules.
- Coordinate activities between multiple trades, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.
- Identify and resolve field issues impacting productivity, quality, safety, or schedule performance.
- Safety Management
- Serve as the Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO) and administer the project safety program.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA requirements, project safety plans, and established safety procedures.
- Conduct daily site safety inspections and address unsafe conditions or behaviors.
- Facilitate toolbox talks, safety meetings, and project safety training.
- Review and maintain safety documentation, reports, inspections, and incident records.
- Support development and implementation of Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs) and risk mitigation measures.
- Scheduling & Project Controls
- Assist project leadership with development and maintenance of project schedules.
- Monitor and update progress on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
- Develop and manage short-term look-ahead schedules.
- Coordinate upcoming work activities and resource requirements with subcontractors and field teams.
- Support project planning, logistics, and execution strategies.
- Quality & Field Coordination
- Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with project quality requirements.
- Coordinate with project management, engineering, and quality personnel.
- Assist with inspections, testing, deficiency tracking, and corrective actions.
- Maintain communication with owners, consultants, inspectors, and subcontractors to support successful project delivery.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience as a Construction Superintendent on projects valued at $25 million or greater.
- Demonstrated experience supervising civil construction and site development activities.
- Experience managing underground utility installations, including water and wastewater systems.
- Experience with directional drilling, treatment facilities, utility infrastructure, or related heavy civil projects.
- Minimum 5 years of construction safety management experience.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification with documented ongoing safety training.
- Strong knowledge of construction means, methods, sequencing, and safety practices.
- Ability to lead subcontractors and field personnel in a fast-paced construction environment.
- Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
- Willingness to travel and temporarily relocate to the project site.
Preferred Qualifications
- Federal construction experience.
- Experience supporting projects for agencies such as USACE, NAVFAC, National Park Service, Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs, or GSA.
- Background in water/wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, pipelines, and utility infrastructure.
- Experience serving in a combined Superintendent and SSHO capacity.
- Proficiency with scheduling, project controls, and field reporting processes.
