Water Treatment Utilities Mechanic I / II - Department of Public Works / Utilities

Essential Functions

• Answers complaints concerning violations of animal law.
  • Makes reports of violations; maintains records.
  • Issues summons, obtains warrants; testifies in court.
  • Ensures that animals are properly licensed.
  • Secures stray dogs, cats, and other animals.
  • Operates animal collection truck; transports animals to center.

Education/Experience

• Graduation from high school or vocational school or any equivalent combination of training and experience to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public.

Additional Information & Requirements

• If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
• Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license.
• Applicants selected for an interview will be required to bring in a copy of their Department of Motor Vehicle driving record no more than 30 days old.

• This position requires knowledge of municipal animal control ordinances.
• This position requires knowledge of street patterns and major intersections within the City of Norfolk.
• This position requires the ability to apprehend, transport, secure and dispose of animals in accordance with state and local laws.
• This position requires the ability to lift, carry, push and pull animals, boxes and equipment.
• This position requires the ability to kneel, crouch and crawl while inspecting property, and looking under fences, shrubs, and buildings for animals.
• This position requires the ability to work in extreme temperatures (both hot and cold) in dirty and dusty environments.
• This position requires the ability to handle, secure and work with animals in a work environment.
