About the role

The City of Sterling Heights seeks a full-time Mechanic to join the Department of Public Works. The position involves performing complex repairs to city vehicles and equipment under the supervision of a Division Supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Perform repairs to engines, drive trains, suspensions, steering, and front ends, and heavy diesel equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair electronic fuel systems, computer-controlled engine systems, emission systems, and other complex mechanical issues.
  • Use independent judgment to determine the method of repair based on the condition of the vehicle or equipment.
  • Operate a commercial vehicle with air brakes endorsement.
  • May require overtime work.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years full-time mechanic work experience, including engine, drive train, suspension, steering, and heavy diesel equipment repairs.
  • Commercial Driver's License with Air Brakes endorsement.
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Michigan State Automobile and Light Truck Certifications in Manual Transmission and Axles, Front End Suspension & Steering Systems, Brakes and Braking Systems, Electrical Systems, Heating & Air Conditioning, Engine Repair, and Engine Tune-Up.
  • Welding and fabrication experience is highly desirable.

Qualifications

  • Must be mechanically inclined and possess problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic tools and techniques is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and follow safety protocols.

Pay and Schedule

  • Up to $40.1193/hr with pay increases every 12 months on your anniversary date and annually on July 1st.
  • Monday - Friday from 7:00am - 3:30pm with potential for overtime.
