Description

On assigned shifts, responsible for operations of the municipal water treatment facility and storage facilities; highly skilled work in charge of operating and maintaining a water treatment plant and water pumping stations; performs all other related work as required.

Works to anticipate, meet and exceed customer service expectations in a positive and professional manner.

Job Environment

Work is performed under typical shop and field conditions, with exposure to various weather conditions and the hazardous conditions associated with construction sites.

On call (24 hours/day) on a rotating basis; may be required to work beyond the normal hours of a regular workweek.

At the water treatment plant, there are health hazards from chemicals and fumes, and electrical shock.

Essential Functions

  • Operates all water treatment and other related equipment, such as lab equipment, gasoline cut-off saw and leak listening devices, pneumatic, hand and power tools; operates light truck and automobile; operates computer and standard office equipment.
  • Makes occasional contacts with other city and state officials and with the general public; has ongoing contacts with commercial and industrial users of the city’s water system to ensure compliance with rules and regulations relating to policies of the Water Department; resolves difficult customer service requests in person, by telephone, or in writing; investigates customer complaints.
  • Water quality and pressure complaints are responded to in coordination with the Chief Operator and Utilities Supervisor.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill

  • Thorough knowledge of the policies and operating procedures of the City’s water supply source.
  • Specialized knowledge of water distribution and water treatment systems.
  • Knowledge of water production system, pumping station operations, and diesel, gas, and electric motors.
  • Knowledge of the local, state and federal water treatment regulations.
  • General knowledge of other municipal services provided by the Department of Public Works.
  • Working knowledge of department equipment.

Physical Requirements

  • Moderate to heavy physical effort required in connection with the operation and maintenance of water treatment facilities and equipment.
  • Frequent lifting in excess of 30 pounds required.
  • Must be able to access all areas of the water plant and able to walk, talk, listen stand and crouch for extended periods of time.
  • The position has normal vision requirements including the ability to adjust focus and close and distant vision.
