Water Systems Operations Assistant NB

Performs installation, maintenance, and repair on water distribution and wastewater collection facilities. Operates a variety of heavy equipment, specialized equipment, and other department-related equipment.

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. May include after-hours call-back.

Pay

Salary range: $19.07–$25.74 per hour. Hiring range: $19.07–$22.40 depending on qualifications and experience.

About the role

This is a temporary position lasting up to 10 months, with a 40-hour work week and the option for medical coverage only.

Responsibilities

• Installs, maintains, and repairs or replaces water distribution and wastewater collection facilities and lines, fire hydrants, water valves, and water services.
• Maintains equipment and vehicles such as dump trucks, front-end loaders, excavators, and other applicable equipment.
• Ensures truck is stocked with necessary materials and tools, and all equipment is ready for the next job.
• Uses proper safety apparel, procedures, and equipment per City standards.
• Works safely in very high-traffic areas.
• Responds to emergency call-back situations on short notice.
• Assists other work groups in the Water and Power Department and other City departments as assigned.
• Keeps accurate and meaningful records.
• Maintains assigned equipment to specifications, including using correct fuel, checking gauges and fluid levels, and ensuring equipment is clean inside and out.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Some experience in underground utilities, water, and/or wastewater systems preferred.
• Valid driver’s license required.

Skills

• Knowledge of operational procedures of construction equipment, hazards, and necessary safety precautions.
• Ability to recognize and report abnormal operating functions of equipment.
• General knowledge of construction methods and equipment.
• General knowledge of safety practices and procedures, including trench safety, traffic control, and personal protective equipment.
• Knowledge of confined space entry and ability to work in confined spaces.
• Ability to operate equipment and use tools in all weather conditions.
• General knowledge of pipe materials and repair parts used by the department.
• Working knowledge of distribution and collection systems.
• Working knowledge of water taps and meter installations.
• Ability to operate assigned equipment safely under all conditions, including weather, stress, and time of day.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

• Frequent moderate to considerable physical effort, including working from ladders in awkward positions.
• Frequent use of light or medium-weight objects (25–50 lbs) and medium-weight tools.
• Frequent exposure to heat, noise, and outdoor elements.
• Occasional exposure to predictable hazards with proper protection.
• Work is generally performed outside, occasionally during inclement weather.
• Requires sitting for extended periods.
• Strenuous physical work may involve moving, positioning, bending, climbing, stooping, kneeling, and pushing or pulling objects up to 100 lbs occasionally and up to 50 lbs frequently.
• Manual dexterity required for safe operation of hand tools, power tools, and motor vehicles.
• May involve long hours, after-hours work, holidays, and weekends.
• Mandatory duty rotation includes after-hour and weekend work.
