Water Service Investigator - Examination

Responsibilities
- Investigate, diagnose, and remediate water distribution system issues in response to customer complaints.
- Act as the first responder to water distribution system emergencies such as leaks and breaks to mitigate or resolve situations through correct workflow, follow-up, and job prioritization.
- Investigate, remediate, or refer issues including:
- Street depressions
- Hydrant and service line leaks (inspection, testing, and sampling for origination clarification)
- Poor pressure complaints
- Hydrant flushing
- House-to-house hookups
- Brick Vault (BV) leaks
- Turn on/off of water service
- Turn off/take out BV and base meters
- Reset/change BV and base meter leak/change/reset
- Missing cover replacements
- Flush-outs
- Dig-ups
- Utilize and operate tools for repair work on water distribution system appurtenances.
- Read maps and utilize a computer.
- Survey areas of concern and communicate activities and conditions that may impact task initiation and/or completion.
- Perform other job-related duties as required.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Three years of full-time paid distribution maintenance field operations and repairs experience, which includes two years of water pipe repair.
- Substitution: Five years of full-time paid water distribution investigation experience may be substituted for the two years of water pipe repair experience.
- Solid verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work alone, in confined spaces, at any time of day or night, and/or outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
- Must be able to lift and carry 75 pounds.
- Valid State of Ohio Driver’s License required.
- A Water Distribution Operator’s License is preferred.

Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) Preference Credit
Applicants who are graduates of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) and are participating in an open competitive entrance-level examination may receive an additional five (5) points upon achieving a passing score. Proof of graduation from a CMSD school must be provided at the time of application.
Veterans’ Preference
Veterans’ preference will be awarded in accordance with Civil Service Rules 4.40E, 4.40F, and 4.40G. Proof of active service or a DD Form 214 must be presented to qualify for veterans’ credit. Honorably discharged veterans receive an additional five (5) points; veterans with a service-connected disability of more than 15% receive an additional ten (10) points. Only a DD Form 214 (long form) or an official armed service document indicating type of discharge or separation and dates of active service will be accepted as proof.
