Water Maintenance Technician

Basic Requirements

Perform skilled work in the maintenance, installation and repair of laterals, mains, meters, valves, service lines, and any other equipment associated with the water distribution system as required. In addition, understanding the requirements of NC 811 utility locating and ability to properly locate underground utilities is a requirement of this position.

Requirements

• Must possess a valid NC Class C Drivers License with a clean driving record
• May perform physically demanding manual work including lifting, pushing, pulling heavy objects; shoveling, raking, standing on ladders, climbing, standing or walking for sustained periods of time
• Must possess or be able to obtain a CDL Class B license as needed or as required by supervisor
• Experience operating equipment (e.g. backhoe, mini excavator, trackhoe, tractor, etc.) shall be considered advantageous but not required
• Graduation from high school or equivalent GED required
• Most duties in this position are at times performed under adverse working conditions, working outdoors, exposed to cold/hot temperatures, water, mud, dirt and grease. Must be able and willing to work in these conditions from time to time

Responsibilities

• Identify and repair leaks in the water distribution system. Repairs vary in size ranging from ¾" service lines up to 24" main distribution lines
• Install taps and make service connections to water distribution system
• Knowledgeable in the installation of water meters and water meter boxes
• Properly maintain and turn in all flushing and maintenance repair reports
• Operate and take responsibility for all tools, equipment and materials used in the installation, maintenance and repair of all items relating to the water distribution system
• Inspect, clean and maintain equipment utilized in the water maintenance department
• Collect and test water samples for Chlorine content on an as needed basis
• Perform work required to dress up water line repair areas. Includes but not limited to patching roadways/crosslines with asphalt, placing and spreading fill material as needed, seeding and mulching as required
• Must adhere to all NC811 requirements regarding any underground utilities up to and including calling in locates for excavation areas
• Must have knowledge and ability to properly locate underground utilities such as water, gas, electric, telephone, fiber-optic, etc. in order to prevent damages to these facilities
• Respond to emergency situations at any hour as needed. Employee shall be "on call" at least one weekend per month and must be available to attend to any water maintenance issues that may arise while "on call"
• Must be able to locate valves, meters, hydrants from maps/drawings/GIS
• Must work safely and utilize all PPE as required by the task at hand
• Perform any other duties as required by supervisor
• Must be able to communicate and deal with members of the public in a respectable manner
