About the Role
The GIS Intern supports the Aurora Water Department through a variety of GIS tasks, including data collection, analysis, database management, cartography, and support of mobile and web GIS technologies.
Responsibilities
- Create new assets and track their associated attributes in a versioned enterprise geodatabase (ArcSDE) and Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) using AutoCAD files and engineering drawings.
- Oversee and conduct research to find and verify GIS data from source documents to maintain water department GIS and CMMS data.
- Support asset management activities.
- Assist in providing training and technical assistance in the use of GIS data, software, and mobile applications to department staff.
- Prepare maps for various department divisions using proper cartographic principles.
- Utilize ESRI ArcGIS Online/Portal applications such as web maps, web apps, dashboards, story maps, and other applications to meet department needs.
- Process and share data for department GIS applications (system models, asset management, master planning, etc.) and fulfill external data requests as needed.
- Perform GIS analysis to support decision-making.
- Assist with field data collection as needed.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Currently enrolled or a recent graduate from an accredited GIS program.
- Experience with ESRI products and cartographic design.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current or prior GIS-related internship.
- Knowledge of related software (AutoCAD, Bluebeam, INFOR Public Sector, NEXGEN, FME, Aquanuity, and SQL).
- Knowledge of the utility industry and ability to interpret engineering drawings.

Working Conditions
- Essential Personnel: May be required to work during local emergencies or disasters.
- Physical Demands: Sedentary work involving moving up to 10 pounds; occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing. Vision, dexterity, speech, and hearing sufficient for computer and office equipment use.
- Work Environment: Primarily clean, comfortable office setting with occasional field visits to Aurora Water facilities (treatment plants, pump stations, tanks, reservoirs) and linear assets (water/wastewater/stormwater pipes, valves, ponds, manholes).
- Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, personal computers, advanced software, and on-premises/cloud databases. May require use of personal equipment (e.g., vehicle, cell phone, tools).
Pay
The hiring range for this position is $19.45 - $26.40 per hour.
Schedule
- Term-limited position with an anticipated duration of 12 months.
- Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee (VHNE) status: less than 29 hours per week, no medical benefits provided.
- Earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.
- Scheduled furlough days (unpaid) in 2026: January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
