Responsibilities

  • Keeps the mission, vision, and values of the City of Port St. Lucie at the forefront of decision making and action;
  • Buils strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust;
  • Provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives, maintaining high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
  • Provides “on-site” supervision during the following operation or maintenance activities that may affect water quality of quantity:
    • Tapping, depressurizing/dewatering, or disinfecting existing water mains;
    • Variated maintenance and construction activities to the Utility water distribution systems;
    • Tapping water mains to be used for service lines;
    • Maintenance on exposed mains (remove pipe, maintain valves);
    • Transfer back to front (switch from main behind house to main in front);
    • Re-route service lines;
    • Install new services;
    • Small distribution main repair (valve, clamp replacement);
    • Cut-ins/tie-ins;
    • Install/relocate a fire hydrant;
    • Transmission main repair;
    • Install line stop;
    • Set up and install service saddles and valves in water main.
  • Assigns, supervises and participates in the work of individuals engaged in the various maintenance, construction and repair activities including, but not limited to water utility mains, and residential water services.
  • Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet schedules, using knowledge of the capabilities of workers and equipment.
  • Regular and punctual attendance.
  • May be required to operate heavy equipment in the performance of the jobs.
  • May be required to work on a crew, if needed.
  • Perform routine maintenance on City-owned property (mowing, trimming, debris clearance, weed control, etc.).
  • Makes inspections to ascertain working conditions, materials needed, and other information relative to the project.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving problems.
  • Maintains time and material records and provide monthly reports to division supervisor.
  • May require being on the twenty-four (24) hour emergency on-call schedule.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in utility systems maintenance and construction is preferred.
  • Possession of valid driver’s license and maintenance of clean driving record required with the ability to obtain a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days from date of hire.
  • A Water Distribution System Operator Level 3 license issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection is required.
  • A valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License - Class “A” with “N” tanker endorsement and maintenance of a clean driving record required.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in public utility construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the effective operation and use of heavy and light maintenance and construction equipment.
  • Knowledge of effective supervisory techniques.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and safe operating procedures.
  • Knowledge of routine grounds keeping maintenance.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment required to perform duties (mower, weed-eater, lopper, chain saw, etc.).
  • Ability to plan and assign the work of individuals engaged in a variety of maintenance and construction work.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction plans and specifications.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Ability to focus on the positive in every situation.
  • Ability to model respect for individuals, teams, and the organization.
  • Ability to stay centered when challenged.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to follow through with assigned tasks.
  • Assist with adjusting work procedures to meet schedules using knowledge of the capabilities of workers and equipment.
  • Responds to residential customer questions and concerns.
