Aurora Water is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the drinking water, sanitary sewer and storm drainage systems, treatment of drinking water and non-potable reclaimed wastewater for irrigation, billing and collection, public outreach and water conservation, acquisition and development of future water rights, major capital projects programs, and quality control for regulatory compliance and public health.

About the Role

The Water Utility Lead serves as a lead worker over an assigned group of employees and performs complex skilled work duties related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of water Transmission and Distribution systems.

Responsibilities

  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs on water infrastructure
  • Assigns, oversees, and reviews work and work crews
  • Operates and maintains specialized equipment and vehicles
  • Coordinates daily work activities working with peers
  • Troubleshoots, identifies, and repairs water system concerns
  • Provides customer service during routine and emergency situations
  • Prepares, maintains maintenance records and reports on work activities and equipment
  • Assists in the training of assigned personnel
  • Responds to water, wastewater, and stormwater emergencies
  • Performs snow removal activities
  • Performs stand-by duties
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Requirements

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED

Experience

  • Three years progressively responsible experience in maintenance, operation, and repair with water distribution systems

Knowledge

  • Thorough knowledge and techniques of water distribution system operation, maintenance, and repair
  • Thorough knowledge of hazards, practices, procedures, equipment, and tool operation, systems, and processes common to water operations and common safety practices and procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of blueprints, grade and elevation notations
  • Thorough knowledge of the City of Aurora
  • Technical knowledge of the water utility systems with expertise on water system valve operations, hydraulics, and pressure zones
  • Thorough knowledge of excavation and trenching, traffic control, confined space entry, and other job safety operations
  • Knowledge of the data management system

Skills

  • Skilled in the safe operation of PRVs, valves, fire hydrants, ARVs, potable, reuse or raw water delivery systems
  • Skilled in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment operation
  • Skilled in training and monitoring of assigned personnel
  • Skilled in recognizing hazards, finding resolution, understanding specifications, and attention to detail

Abilities

  • Ability to understand complex instructions, specifications, and situations relative to job assignments
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, management, and citizens
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Understand oral and written instructions
  • Coordinate effectively with other sections and departments

  • Work with Supervisor to provide documentation and feedback related to employees and work assignments
  • Organize and coordinate daily work activities working with other Water Utility Leads
  • Problem-solve with resolution on work sites

Licenses and Certifications

  • Class B CDL with Tanker Endorsement
  • Colorado Water Distribution 2 or Wastewater Collection 2

Working Conditions

Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands

  • Medium lifting not more than 50 pounds at a time and infrequent heavy lifting of not more than 100 pounds
  • Frequent lifting, walking, bending, pushing, pulling, standing, stooping/crouching, and climbing
  • Continuous hand/eye coordination for operation of power tools, vehicles, and equipment
  • Speech to maintain communication with employees and citizens
  • Vision to read manuals and gauges
  • Hearing for instruction, troubleshooting, and warning signals

Work Environment

  • Continuously works outdoors on a variety of terrain and all-weather conditions, with exposure to noise, dust, odors, and fumes
  • Routine work in confined space, frequent vehicle traffic, and pedestrian interaction

Equipment Used

  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment common to maintenance and repair activities
  • Uses computer and electronic devices for email and data input
  • Operates a motor vehicle, tandem axle dump truck, small and large heavy equipment including specialized equipment depending on discipline
  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g., vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment

Pay

The hiring range for this position is $30.64 - $38.30 per hour.

Schedule

The City of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
