Wastewater Operator

Job Summary

The City of Sioux Falls is hiring a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator who will operate, inspect, and monitor SCADA control panel and various mechanical and electrical equipment to ensure compliance with discharge permit. This role requires a motivated, reliable individual with hands-on skills and a passion for environmental safety.

Job Responsibilities

• Operate, inspect, and monitor SCADA control panel and a wide variety of mechanical and electrical equipment while operating unit processes used in wastewater treatment.
• Make regular tours of the wastewater facility; read charts, gauges, and other instruments; and record information on plant logs.
• Collect wastewater and sludge samples and perform basic field and laboratory analysis on the samples.
• Operate a variety of unit processes used in the treatment of wastewater.
• Interpret all data accumulated and make equipment and process control changes within guidelines established by management.
• Perform minor maintenance and labor tasks, including general housekeeping.
• Perform other duties as necessary or incidental to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED certification with two (2) years’ advanced or specialized education or vocational training, or a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in wastewater treatment facility operation.
• Willingness to work varied schedules and rotating shifts.
• Possession of a valid South Dakota Wastewater Operator’s Certificate within one year of hire.
• Valid driver’s license is desirable.

Supplemental Information

• Knowledge of wastewater treatment fundamentals, including physical, chemical, and biological processes.
• Understanding of wastewater treatment unit operations and safety protocols.
• Ability to interpret laboratory data and apply it to process control.
• Experience with sampling and preservation techniques.
