About the role

Interstate Waste Services is seeking Garbage Truck‑Collection Helpers in Rockaway, NJ. The role involves physically collecting and loading refuse from customer locations into a heavy‑duty sanitation vehicle. The company is a progressive provider of solid waste and recycling services across Northern New Jersey, Southern New York State, New York City, and expanding operations in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Responsibilities

• Collect (primarily by hand) and load refuse from customer locations into the sanitation vehicle.
• Transfer refuse in a timely and safe manner from customer stops to the vehicle.
• Assist the driver while maneuvering into positions for collection and disposal.
• Maintain and partake in daily clean‑up of the vehicle.
• Learn garbage routes to better assist the driver.
• Attend all required training, operational meetings, and mandatory monthly safety meetings.
• Mount and dismount the truck throughout the workday and physically lift, push, and pull waste bags and receptacles weighing approximately 50‑75+ lb.
• Follow supervision from the onsite Operations Manager, Route Supervisors, and Dispatchers.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States.
• Meet the physical standards described above (ability to lift 50‑75+ lb, mount/dismount truck, etc.).
• Experience in the sanitation industry is strongly preferred.
• Team‑player attitude; work is performed in close quarters with other staff members.
• Other duties as assigned.

Pay

Hourly rate: $21.00 per hour (minimum and maximum).

Schedule

• Monday – Friday with occasional Saturdays.
• Early start time at 4:00 am.
• Year‑round steady work.
