Wage and Hour Technician (Bilingual English / Spanish).
This is a developmental position with a career ladder progression of GS-07/8/9. In the developmental grade levels, the employee will carry out a variety of assignments as a continuation of their training and development, with duties performed under closer than normal supervision. As the employee progresses, assignments will become more difficult and complex in preparation to fully perform the duties at the full performance level (GS-09).
Responsibilities
- Assists the Deputy Director/Assistant Deputy Director (DD/ADD) as needed with various administrative and management duties.
- Provides technical assistance to the public, employers, and employees regarding Wage and Hour laws and regulations.
- Uses a computer to input data, create documents, and maintain files.
- Initiates appropriate notification and/or referral to other agencies.
- Types letters, forms, email communications, and other applicable documents.
- Receives incoming complaints and determines if probable violations exist or refers callers to the appropriate agency or personnel.
- Provides answers to inquiries relating to the statutes enforced by the Wage and Hour Division.
- Documents detailed complaint statements thoroughly addressing the alleged violation(s).
- Drafts and prepares responses to letters for employers and employees on the application of Wage and Hour laws, back wage installments, complaints investigations, statutes, etc.
- Communicates with internal and external personnel to determine the validity of complaints.
- Conducts interviews in person, via telephone, or virtually using systems such as Microsoft Teams.
- Contacts employers by telephone to resolve complaints and, where appropriate, computes and negotiates back wages for complaints by means of conciliatory methods.
- Reviews time and payroll records to identify violations in pay and employment practices.
- Under supervision, computes back wages, penalties, and liquidated damages.
- Applies accounting procedures necessary for monitoring and handling back wage payments.
- Uses judgment in selecting alternative means of locating material necessary to investigate, complete, or follow through on complaints and other cases.
- Determines the relevance and importance of a large number of facts or questions and analyzes conditions and elements to define interrelationships and applicability of governing wage and hour provisions, drawing conclusions.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Requires a probationary period if the requirement has not been met.
- Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
- Bilingual (Spanish and English) fluency is REQUIRED. You will be interviewed in both Spanish and English and may be required to read, write, and/or translate documents from Spanish to English and vice versa. Further consideration will not be given if you fail to demonstrate fluency in both languages.
Qualifications
Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-6 in the Federal Service. Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform the duties of the position successfully.
Qualifying Specialized Experience for GS-7 includes:
- Experience preparing written communication to summarize information.
- Experience responding to and/or resolving customer complaints.
- Experience assisting with interviews or investigations to gather data/information.
- Experience analyzing numerical data to identify discrepancies and/or perform mathematical calculations.
