Wage and Hour Technician.
This is a developmental position with a career ladder progression of GS-07/8/9. In the developmental grade levels, the employee will carry out a variety of assignments as part of their training and development, with duties performed under closer-than-normal supervision. As the employee progresses, assignments will become more difficult and complex in preparation for the full performance level (GS-09).
Responsibilities
- Assists the Deputy Director/Assistant Deputy Director (DD/ADD) with various administrative and management duties.
- Provides technical assistance to the public, employers, and employees regarding Wage and Hour laws and regulations.
- Uses a computer to input data, create documents, and maintain files; initiates appropriate notifications and/or referrals to other agencies.
- Types letters, forms, email communications, and other applicable documents.
- Receives incoming complaints and determines if probable violations exist or refers callers to the appropriate agency or personnel.
- Provides answers to inquiries relating to statutes enforced by the Wage and Hour Division.
- Documents detailed complaint statements thoroughly addressing alleged violations.
- Drafts and prepares responses to letters for employers and employees on the application of Wage and Hour laws, back wage installments, complaints, investigations, and statutes.
- Communicates with internal and external personnel to determine the validity of complaints.
- Conducts interviews in person, via telephone, or virtually using systems such as Microsoft Teams.
- Contacts employers by telephone to resolve complaints and, where appropriate, computes and negotiates back wages using conciliatory methods.
- Reviews time and payroll records to identify violations in pay and employment practices.
- Under supervision, computes back wages, penalties, and liquidated damages.
- Applies accounting procedures necessary for monitoring and handling back wage payments.
- Uses judgment in selecting alternative means of locating material necessary to investigate, complete, or follow through on complaints and other cases.
- Determines the relevance and importance of facts or questions, analyzes conditions and elements to define interrelationships, and applies governing wage and hour provisions to draw conclusions.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Requires a probationary period if the requirement has not been met.
- Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
Qualifications
Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-6 in the Federal Service. Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform the duties of the position successfully.
Qualifying Specialized Experience for GS-7 includes:
- Experience preparing written communication to summarize information.
- Experience responding to and/or resolving customer complaints.
- Experience assisting with interviews or investigations to gather data/information.
- Experience analyzing numerical data to identify discrepancies and/or perform mathematical calculations.
Bilingual English/Spanish language fluency (Preferred): Spanish and English fluency is preferred but not required. If you indicate fluency in both languages, you may be interviewed in both and asked to read, write, and/or translate documents to verify fluency.
Education
There is no substitution of education for specialized experience at this grade level.
