About the role

Reports to the Coordinator/Director. Performs computerized tomography (CT) scans and procedures that require independent judgment and a high degree of precision and skill in the application of high technology computerized CT equipment. Follows protocols and procedures as directed by the radiologist and/or supervising technologist.

Responsibilities

  • Selects technical factors to optimize image quality.
  • Evaluates images for technical quality and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Reports any malfunctions of equipment to supervisor.
  • Cleans and maintain equipment.
  • Performs equipment calibration and warm-up as needed.
  • Be able to load and select technical factors for Power Injections.
  • Recognizes pathology and adjusts scanning as necessary.
  • Knows cross-sectional anatomy.
  • Absorbs responsibility for schedule management/patient flow.
  • Follows established department protocols. If necessary, protocol exam with reading Radiologist.
  • Explains the steps of the CT procedure to the patient.
  • Identifies patients with contrast allergies and pre-medicates according to department policy.
  • Starts IV for contrast media injection.
  • Maintains IV site during Power Injection.
  • Reports any IV infiltrations to EMS HITS.
  • Orients and train new CT staff.
  • Works with Job Shadow, students, etc. to familiarize them with CT.
  • Includes patient in decisions about their treatment.
  • Responsible for wearing radiation badge and reviewing Landauer.
  • Reports when posted.
  • Captures flow of patients in department when necessary.
  • Keeps room adequately stocked with linens and supplies.
  • Verifies all written orders prior to beginning procedure to ensure proper diagnosis is included.
  • Completes all steps to ensure that images are on the PACS and ready to read.
  • Enters accurate exam codes so proper charging is accomplished.
  • Familiar with splitting exams into separate folders.
  • Scans all pertinent documents into patient file in PACS.
  • Films images as requested and ensure quality.
  • Burns images to CDs as requested and verify that images are viewable.
  • Enters accurate exam information into Radiology Information System.
  • Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the department.
  • Completes other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
  • Organizes patient data/image movement.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Department Function

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of an Associates Degree or Professional Training ARRT, State Certification, must maintain current CPR certification.
  • Registered in CT Scan with ARRT (required within 6 months of eligibility to maintain position).
  • A minimum of 1 to 2 years of job-related experience is required: 1-2 years previous experience as a radiographer required. Six months CT experience preferred.
  • Requires current registry with American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
  • Requires a current certificate from the State.
  • Familiarity with CT equipment.
  • Familiarity with cross-section anatomy is a must.
  • Knowledge of limited nursing skills and sterile techniques, including intravenous catheter administrations.
