VP of Engineering - Applications

About the role

Seeq makes data analytics software for industrial process data, serving industries like pharmaceutical manufacturers, wind farms, and energy companies. Our software engineers tackle complex challenges in streaming calculation, storage, and distributed computing using Java, Kotlin, React, Python, Kubernetes, and other modern technologies. We're seeking an engineering leader to manage and elevate our end-user-facing squads, which comprise roughly half of our engineering team, as we grow our customer base and market reach.

Seeq was founded as a 100% remote company over 13 years ago, and we've built a global team that collaborates effectively across time zones (core hours: 8am-12pm Pacific). We use agile methodologies, a variety of collaboration tools (Zoom, Slack, our homegrown Qube Virtual Office), and foster a culture of kindness, collaboration, and continuous learning.

Our technology stack includes JVM languages (Java, Kotlin), Python, TypeScript/React, and C#/.NET. Our core product is a calculation engine that performs complex math and executes machine learning algorithms on streaming time series data. Our SaaS architecture runs on Kubernetes, with clusters in a dozen global regions across AWS and Azure.

Responsibilities

• Lead and expand the capacity of our end-user-facing engineering squads, which make up roughly half of the engineering team.
• Maintain hands-on technical involvement to keep your skills and knowledge current.
• Guide teams through the full enterprise software development lifecycle, including Agile methodologies (Scrumban), CI/CD pipelines, discovery, design, quality assurance, and support.
• Mentor and coach engineers, providing clear guidance while fostering autonomy and learning from mistakes.
• Manage and resolve conflicts among individuals, teams, and leaders with empathy and transparency.
• Influence and lead without relying on hierarchy, using curiosity and active learning to drive decisions.
• Travel periodically to spend face-to-face time with the team and company.
• Balance work and life demands in a high-level leadership role.

Requirements

• Passion for computers and programming.
• Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
• Hands-on technical leadership with current skills and meaningful contributions to technical teams.
• Experience in distributed computing and deep knowledge of the cloud ecosystem.
• Expertise in enterprise software development lifecycles, including Agile methodologies, CI/CD pipelines, and quality assurance.
• Leadership qualities: inspiring, humble, empathetic, compassionate, and transparent.
• Strong mentorship and coaching abilities, with a focus on clear guidance and growth.
• Ability to influence without authority and manage conflict effectively.
• Disciplined, detail-oriented, and reliable in communication.
• Willingness to travel periodically for team and company face-to-face interactions.
• Desire to work with a collaborative, talented team in a high-growth scaleup.
