VP of Commercial Legal
Accountabilities
The VP of Commercial Legal will lead the development and execution of commercial legal strategy, ensuring the legal function operates as a strategic business partner. This role combines executive advisory, operational leadership, commercial expertise, and team development to support continued growth.
Define and execute the long-term vision, strategy, and operating model for the commercial legal function.
Act as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and key commercial stakeholders on legal, business, and strategic matters.
Lead negotiations and provide guidance on complex commercial agreements, technology transactions, partnerships, and business initiatives.
Build scalable contract frameworks, templates, governance models, and processes that improve speed, consistency, and risk management.
Transform legal operations through automation, simplification, and AI-enabled tools that increase productivity and efficiency.
Establish practical legal approaches that balance business opportunities with appropriate risk management.
Partner with teams across sales, finance, procurement, marketing, operations, and other business functions to support strategic objectives.
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing global legal team while fostering collaboration and continuous improvement.
Manage legal resources, budgets, organizational planning, and operational priorities.
Drive adoption of emerging technologies and help establish governance approaches for AI-enabled business environments.
Provide commercial guidance that enables the organization to remain agile as markets, regulations, and technology evolve.
Develop legal processes and standards that support global scale, partner relationships, and future growth.
Requirements
The ideal candidate is a commercially minded legal executive with extensive experience advising technology-driven organizations and leading legal teams through periods of growth and transformation. They should combine strong legal expertise with strategic business judgment and operational leadership.
Extensive experience advising on complex commercial and technology-related transactions.
Proven track record of building, scaling, and leading commercial legal teams.
Experience working in fast-growing technology, SaaS, cloud, marketplace, or similar business environments.
Strong understanding of commercial contracting, partner agreements, and technology-related legal frameworks.
Ability to translate complex legal issues into practical, actionable business recommendations.
Demonstrated success influencing executive leadership and supporting strategic decision-making.
Strong negotiation, stakeholder management, and advisory skills.
Experience implementing scalable legal operations, governance structures, and process improvements.
Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous, rapidly changing environments.
Interest in AI, automation, and emerging technologies, with the ability to support responsible adoption.
