About the role

The American Medical Association (AMA) is seeking a VP, Human Resources (Hybrid) to join our Human Resources team in Chicago, IL. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a week in the office. This role is a leader in the Human Resources team with responsibility for providing all HR-related services to the AMA Senior Management Group (SMG) and AMA workforce.

Responsibilities

  • HR Business Partnering
    • HR’s liaison to the SMG, providing all HR-related services as needed or as anticipated.
    • Proactively provides guidance and advice, and is a resource to brainstorm organizational, employee or other staffing issues.
    • Collaborates across HR functions and non-HR functions to arrive at positive solutions to HR issues across the organization.
    • Develops best practices to instill and maintain a value-added business partner mindset within the Talent Acquisition and HR Business Partner teams.
    • Partners with SMG leaders to support reorganizational or other large projects, defining the project scope and required resources and overseeing the project team of HR Business Partners and other HR specialists.
  • Talent Acquisition
    • Recruiting functions including assessment, team management, sourcing and search firm (contingent and retained) selection for all positions at the Vice Presidential level and below.
    • Leads or co-leads recruiting for Group Vice Presidents and Vice Presidents.
    • Oversees the design and execution of the overall talent strategy to attract, hire, and retain high-caliber staff.
    • Enhances recruitment infrastructure, such as Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), reducing dependency on external agencies, and optimizing sourcing spend.
    • Works with HR leadership and hiring managers to forecast needs and improve candidate experience.
  • Employee Relations and Employment Compliance
    • Leads the AMA’s employee relations and employment compliance functions.
    • Provides expertise and makes decisions in resolving more complex issues.
    • Primary interface with Office of General Counsel on employee related issues.
    • Develops metrics to track effectiveness of HR results individually and as a group.
    • Uses the metrics to implement process improvements, identify gaps, determine solutions (work flow, training, etc.).
    • Oversees the maintenance of manual and electronic documents, files and records for the purpose of providing accurate information in compliance with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
    • Develops and maintains HR policies and processes to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations and support organizational goals and objectives.
    • Ensures compliance with state, federal, and local regulations.
  • Staff Management
    • Lead, mentor, and provide management oversight for staff.
    • Responsible for setting objectives, evaluating employee performance, and fostering a collaborative team environment.
    • Responsible for developing staff knowledge and skills to support career development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required, master's degree strongly preferred
  • 15+ years of experience in Human Resources; Certification as an HR Professional preferred
  • Deep experience as a strategic HR Business Partner, including employee relations, staffing and counseling
  • 10+ years experience in people management required; able to attract and develop talent
  • Excellent demonstrated working knowledge and application of employment law
  • Proven experience coaching and counseling senior executive level leaders
  • Demonstrated experience managing large projects such as reorganizations or downsizings
  • Experience selecting and managing retained and contingency search firms
  • Excellent demonstrated interpersonal and presentation skills, including proven ability to interact with all levels of staff and management
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate a team environment and work as a strong individual contributor
  • Working knowledge of compensation philosophy and job grading
  • Working knowledge of talent acquisition strategies and processes
  • Demonstrated excellent judgment, decisiveness and problem solving skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to bring credibility to the human resources function through their professional qualifications and leadership and influence ability with experience building respectful and productive collaboration at the most senior levels of a large-scale, complex organization
  • Demonstrated success in change management and an understanding of what is required to succeed in a dynamic environment with an appreciation for the mission, traditions, and culture of the institution
  • Hightly results-oriented
