Volunteer Services Coordinator
Full-time position (1.0 FTE) in the Volunteer Services department, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM.
About the role
The Volunteer Services Coordinator is responsible for the ongoing recruitment, management, recognition, and retention of volunteers at UnityPoint Health – Des Moines. This role works closely and collaboratively with the UnityPoint Health – Des Moines Volunteer Services team, hospital departments, and leadership to support the coordination of volunteer opportunities for high school, college, and adult volunteers. The position maintains focus on innovative volunteer programs that enhance the quality of care for patients, families, staff, and the community. This position coordinates the volunteer services program for Iowa Methodist Medical Center, including Blank Children’s Hospital and John Stoddard Cancer Center, in collaboration with the Volunteer Services team.

Responsibilities
Volunteer Program Coordination
- Accountable for volunteer recruitment, application, onboarding, training, and general management, supervision, and support of volunteers in assigned service areas.
- Plans and coordinates volunteer service placements and changes of assignments; establishes schedules and assignments for volunteers.
- Assists, co-leads, or supports the planning and coordination of new volunteer opportunities, programs, and projects for Volunteer Services. Continuously evaluates for effectiveness and impact, making changes to meet the best outcomes and interests.
- Responsible for volunteer coaching, training, skill, and talent development to maximize their potential and engagement.
Engagement and Outreach
- Develops ongoing relationships with supervisory and managerial staff throughout the hospitals to coordinate volunteer programs and obtain desired results; partners with assigned service supervisors/staff on the supervision and recognition of volunteers.
- Serves as a key representative of Volunteer Services within the organization; communicates on the use of volunteers, trends in Volunteer Services, and best practices; provides information as requested; engages with hospital executives, management, and staff to stay connected to organizational needs.
- Works closely with Volunteer Services Coordinators across hospital campuses and other key hospital departments to establish parallel processes for Volunteer Services.
Requirements
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Degree in communications, education, health sciences, health care or non-profit management/administration, human resources, human services, marketing, or social work preferred.
Experience
- Previous volunteer coordination work experience.
- Project management experience.
- Demonstrated experience as a volunteer.
- Volunteer coordination in a hospital/health care setting strongly preferred.
- Volunteer and/or employee supervisory experience preferred.
- Recruitment, training, and development experience preferred.
- Personnel record maintenance and information processing preferred.
License(s)/Certification(s)
- Certified Administrator of Volunteer Services (CAVS) preferred.
