About The Role
We're looking for an experienced volunteer to help build and manage the people side of our organization. You'll support recruitment, onboarding, policies, and team culture across our staff and volunteers — helping us grow a healthy, well-supported team as we scale our mission. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to build nonprofit HR experience, lead people operations from the ground up, or give back using existing HR expertise.
Responsibilities
- Develop and manage recruitment processes for staff, contractors, and key volunteer roles
- Create and maintain HR policies, handbooks, and onboarding materials
- Support conflict resolution, feedback processes, and performance check-ins
- Ensure compliance with relevant labor laws and best practices (as applicable to nonprofits/volunteers)
- Help build a positive, inclusive team culture across a remote/distributed team
- Manage HR-related documentation and record-keeping
- Advise leadership on team structure, roles, and people-related decisions
- Support benefits, compensation, or contractor-agreement questions where relevant
- Coordinate with the Head of Volunteers on volunteer-specific policies and processes
Who You Are
- Experience in human resources, people operations, or team management
- Knowledge of HR best practices and (ideally) basic employment/labor considerations
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and conflict-resolution skills
- Comfortable building processes from scratch in a resource-constrained environment
- Discreet and trustworthy with sensitive information
- Passionate about [cause area] and nonprofit work
- HR certification (e.g., SHRM, PHR) is a plus, but not required
What You'll Gain
- Real-world experience building HR/people operations for a nonprofit
- Leadership experience for your resume/portfolio
- Flexible, remote schedule
- A letter of recommendation or reference upon request
- The chance to make a direct impact on our mission and our team's wellbeing
