Volunteer Finance/Bookkeeping Advisor

About the role

Our small nonprofit is seeking a volunteer finance/bookkeeping advisor to provide guidance on our bookkeeping processes. This role is ideal for someone with experience in nonprofit bookkeeping and familiarity with Quicken (and/or similar workflows).

Responsibilities

• Advise on how to maintain accurate nonprofit bookkeeping records
• Review our current bookkeeping setup and suggest improvements
• Provide guidance on categorization, reconciliations, and basic month-end tasks
• Help ensure our records support key nonprofit needs, including:
  • Preparing for IRS Form 990
  • State of Florida solicitation reporting
  • Budget planning
  • Supporting grant writing
  • Producing the basic board-level financial reports needed by a Board Treasurer and/or Finance Committee, such as monthly financial statements (income statement/P&L and balance sheet), budget vs. actual reports, cash flow/cash position reporting, and restricted fund/grant tracking
• Be available for occasional questions/consultation with our volunteer/bookkeeper team

Requirements

• Prior experience with nonprofit bookkeeping (required)
• Familiarity using Quicken for bookkeeping and/or reporting (required)
• Strong communication skills and comfort explaining bookkeeping concepts to non-finance staff
• Knowledge of nonprofit compliance and planning is preferred (specifically familiarity with 990, Florida solicitation reporting, and how bookkeeping supports grant, budget, and board-reporting needs)

Time Commitment

1–2 meetings per month, ideally in-person, plus light follow-up by email/phone as needed
