Volunteer Coordinator
About the Role
The Volunteer Coordinator interviews, places, trains, and supervises volunteers for multiple KU affiliated sites. They provide ongoing supervision and training for new and existing volunteers in accordance with Health System policies, current Joint Commission standards, and best practices. The position plans and implements volunteer orientation for all new volunteers and develops volunteer programs based on the needs of the health system. The incumbent also plans, organizes, and implements recognition events for volunteers while ensuring daily operational efficiency for the volunteer department.
Responsibilities
- Provides effective leadership to the volunteer department, strategically identifying and communicating critical success factors necessary for the department and the strategic plan of the University of Kansas Health System.
- Oversees daily operations of the volunteer department, including supervision of volunteers and coordination with staff members in areas they serve.
- Serves as a super-user of the volunteer database to track volunteers’ hours, status (active, inactive, on leave of absence, etc.), trends, and reports, utilizing pertinent information as needed.
- Utilizes volunteers creatively to meet the emotional and psychosocial needs of patients and families.
- Assesses, recruits, and orients volunteers to accomplish the goals of various hospital departments.
- Manages organizational responsibilities to support unit/team goals and works effectively with the management team to identify and resolve problems.
- Demonstrates personal effectiveness in leading the volunteer department toward its goals while modeling appropriate values and promoting organizational culture.
- Creates and communicates a "big picture" understanding of the hospital to ensure the department supports the organization’s mission and values.
- Uses appropriate interpersonal styles and methods to foster a cooperative volunteer spirit within the department and across other departments.
- Manages daily operations to ensure effective selection, orientation, and training of volunteers, including compliance with JCAHO, HIPAA, safety, infection control, confidentiality, legal issues, and hospital policies.
- Maintains all volunteer files in compliance with Joint Commission regulations.
- Assists in planning and implementing special events to reward and recognize adult and high school volunteers, including annual holiday activities and spring recognition events.
- Develops new programs that meet the strategic goals of the health system, including increasing patient satisfaction.
- Provides meaningful volunteer opportunities while helping departments meet their goals to better serve patients and families.
- Seeks continuing education in the field of volunteer management.
- Performs the professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Requirements
- High School Graduate or GED.
- 5 or more years of experience in healthcare or volunteer services.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Certified Administrator of Volunteer Services (CAVS) – Patient Experience Institute (PXi).
Skills
