Volunteer Backend Developer

About The Role

We're looking for a skilled volunteer to help build and maintain the backend systems powering our website, app, or platform. You'll work on databases, APIs, and server-side logic that keep everything running smoothly and securely — all while gaining hands-on experience building real infrastructure for a mission-driven organization. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to build their portfolio, contribute to meaningful open-source-style work, or give back using existing backend engineering skills.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain server-side logic and APIs
• Set up and manage databases (schema design, queries, optimization)
• Ensure application security, data privacy, and proper authentication/authorization
• Integrate with third-party services (payment processors, email tools, CRMs, etc.)
• Write clean, documented, testable code and participate in code reviews
• Monitor performance and troubleshoot bugs or outages
• Collaborate with frontend developers to ensure smooth data flow and integration
• Help plan technical architecture as the platform grows

Who You Are

• Experience with backend languages/frameworks (e.g., Node.js, Python/Django, Ruby on Rails, PHP/Laravel, Java, etc.)
• Familiarity with databases (SQL and/or NoSQL)
• Understanding of API design, security best practices, and version control (Git)
• Comfortable working independently and communicating progress asynchronously
• Detail-oriented with good debugging and problem-solving skills
• Passionate about [cause area] and nonprofit work
• Experience with cloud hosting (AWS, GCP, Azure, Heroku, etc.) is a plus
