Volunteer: Accessible Website Redesign
About the role
This is a volunteer opportunity provided by Taproot Foundation, a nonprofit creating social change through pro bono connections. We are looking for a web designer to rework our site design with accessibility front and center. We have already thought about and are prepared to brief you about our current website platform, budget restrictions for the build, our branding collaterals and norms, and information about our stakeholder groups and target audiences. We've also compiled some photos and have some language developed that we will share with you and samples of sites we like.
Responsibilities
- Assess and incorporate the organization's goals and needs, considering key audiences.
- Assess technical capabilities of the current site.
- Interview the team about desired features, web capabilities, and technical expertise.
- Synthesize information into a requirements briefing.
- Participate in check‑ins where team members provide feedback.
- Audit the current site to create a draft of site architecture and design options, including wireframes, site structure, and other visual elements.
- Deliver a draft of architecture and design concepts that can be shared with a web developer volunteer or team member to build the new site.
Out of scope: web development (implementation of designs) and website messaging.
Skills
- Web design with a strong focus on accessibility.
- Ability to conduct stakeholder interviews and synthesize requirements.
- Experience creating wireframes, site maps, and visual design concepts.
- Familiarity with assessing technical capabilities and constraints.
- Comfort working within a volunteer, pro‑bono context.
Schedule
The project will unfold over multiple meetings spanning six to nine weeks.
Benefits
An accessible, attractive website will help the organization better showcase artists’ work and reach a wider, more inclusive audience. Your design and accessibility expertise will directly support Taproot Foundation’s mission to serve artists and people who appreciate art, creating a space for all abilities in the arts.
