VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR (LANDSCAPE GARDENING SAFETY)

This position serves students in a program integrating academic and technical/occupational curricula to provide pathways to post-secondary education and careers in landscape gardening. The instructor delivers hands-on experience focused on skill acquisition in landscape gardening, collaborating with special education and adult education instructors on curriculum selection, instructional materials, and data-driven instruction. Responsibilities include providing individualized and group education, transition, and vocational skills training as outlined in students' Individual Program Plans (IPP), while adhering to facility policies and procedures.

Candidates must possess and maintain a valid Designated Subjects CTE Teaching Credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), authorizing instruction in landscape gardening within the Agriculture and Natural Resources Industry Sector. The credential must be in good standing. Note: "Students" refers to individuals enrolled in Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) classes.

Responsibilities

• Deliver hands-on vocational training in landscape gardening, focusing on skill acquisition and safety.
• Collaborate with special education and adult education instructors to select and implement academic curricula and instructional materials.
• Use data to inform and adapt instruction to meet student learning goals.
• Provide individualized and group-oriented education, transition, and vocational skills training as specified in students' Individual Program Plans (IPP).
• Maintain order and supervise student conduct to ensure safety of persons and property.
• Incorporate evidence-based practices and recognized instructional strategies to create an effective learning environment.
• Develop and implement activities that build social-emotional skills and support academic proficiency.
• Ensure the safety of students, staff, and the public, including:
  • Escorting students within the facility.
  • Distributing and accounting for training equipment and supplies to prevent misuse.
  • Inspecting facilities for security breaches.
  • Observing and intervening in behaviors that may pose risks to people or property.
• Maintain personal safety by wearing and inspecting Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Adhere to and implement all facility policies and procedures.

Requirements

• Valid Designated Subjects CTE Teaching Credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), authorizing instruction in landscape gardening within the Agriculture and Natural Resources Industry Sector.
• Credential must be in good standing.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds without assistance.
• Capability to participate in emergency interventions or restraints.
• Ability to work extended hours as needed.
• Sufficient strength, agility, endurance, and sensory ability to perform essential job functions.
• Residency in the State of California at the time of appointment.
• Lawful authorization to work in the United States (the Department does not sponsor employment visas for this position).
• Clearance of a Background Investigation and Medical Clearance prior to hiring.

Working Conditions

• Potential exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and other conditions common to a clinical or vocational training environment.
• Regular and substantial contact with students, including those with developmental disabilities.
• Required to respond to emergency situations to ensure public and property safety.
• Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensure it is in good working condition.

Pay

• Salary Ranges (Monthly):
  • Range A: $5,505.00 - $7,233.00
  • Range B: $5,758.00 - $7,567.00
  • Range C: $6,034.00 - $7,926.00
  • Range D: $6,319.00 - $8,304.00
  • Range E: $6,617.00 - $8,694.00
  • Range F: $6,935.00 - $9,569.00
• New state employees will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range, if applicable.
• Effective July 1, 2025, state employees are subject to a 3% salary reduction in exchange for 5 hours per month of Personal Leave.

Benefits

• Temporary state housing may be available for those relocating to fill hard-to-recruit positions. Assignments and rates are determined by department policy, operational priorities, and applicable labor agreements.

Location

Porterville Developmental Center, Tulare County, California. This is a permanent, full-time, in-office position.
