VMware (ESXi) Engineer

About the role

Abile Group is seeking a VMware (ESXi) Engineer on a 10‑year contract to provide user‑facing and data‑center services for an Intelligence Community customer. The team supports innovative design, engineering, procurement, implementation, operations, sustainment and disposal of IT services across multiple networks, security domains, and worldwide locations to advance the IC mission.

Responsibilities

• Design and define system architecture for new or existing compute systems.
• Perform complex systems‑engineering design work, including compute architecture analysis and design, monitoring, troubleshooting, patching, hardware break/fix, and implementation of best security practices within the ESXi virtual‑hosted environment.
• Plan operating‑system upgrades and design system enhancements.
• Develop documentation for new or existing systems.
• Develop and conduct tests to ensure systems meet documented user requirements.
• Identify, analyze, and resolve system problems.
• Provide system/equipment/specialized training and technical guidance.
• Determine system specifications, I/O processes, and working parameters for hardware/software compatibility.
• Provide guidance and work leadership to less‑experienced systems engineers; may have supervisory responsibility.
• Serve as a technical team or task lead as needed.
• Act as liaison with clients, participating in meetings to ensure client needs are met.
• Maintain current knowledge of relevant technology as assigned.
• Participate in special projects as required.

Qualifications

• Security clearance: TS/SCI with ability to obtain a CI Poly.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, or experience).
• Experience: 5+ years of related systems‑engineering experience.
• Required certification: 8140.01M IAT Level II certification.

Required Skills

• Install, configure, and manage VMware virtualization components (vSphere, VMware Aria Automation (vRA), VMware Aria Operations (vROPs), ESXi, NSX/NSX‑T).
• Provide operation and sustainment support for the virtualization environment.
• Ensure virtualization systems comply with required security standards.
• Develop and maintain O&S Standard Operating Procedures for the VMware environment.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot issues in the virtualization environment, including Windows and Linux operating systems.
• Respond to end‑user technical support requests within established procedures.
• Support off‑hours maintenance activities.
• Support the Certification and Accreditation process for virtualization hosts.
• Gain familiarity with current data‑center infrastructure.
• Maintain current industry knowledge of development concepts, practices, and procedures.
• Develop an in‑depth understanding of program baseline capabilities, design, and objectives.
• Hands‑on experience designing and implementing VMware Aria Operations and/or Log Insight in production, including policy and custom dashboard development.
• Advanced knowledge of systems‑engineering principles, methods, and techniques.
• Knowledge of current industry hardware, software, and equipment.
• Professional certification in one or more relevant technologies.
• Experience with VMware ESX 6.7/7.0/8.0, VMware Aria Operations 8.x, VMware Aria Automation 8.x, VMware NSX/NSX‑T.
• Experience with Windows Server 2016/2019/2022, Unix/Linux, Windows 10/11.
• Understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, LAN, Active Directory, and GPO.
• Current VMware and/or Cisco UCS experience (within the last 2 years); VMware and/or UCS certification preferred.

Desired Skills

• Cloud experience (AWS, Azure).
• Cisco UCS Cloud Platform.
• VMware NSX/NSX‑T.
• Experience creating and implementing workflows and blueprints for VMware Aria Automation.
• ServiceNow experience (a plus).
• Technical written and verbal communication skills (technical writing).
• Experience supporting Intelligence and/or DoD customers.
