About the role

The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS), Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, seeks a Visiting Research Archaeologist for its Central Illinois office located in Champaign, Illinois.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Senior Research Archaeologist at the Central Office, and other staff in performing archaeological studies for transportation projects.
  • Plan, conduct, and supervise archaeological surveys, tests, and excavations.
  • Analyze recovered data and prepare archaeological research reports meeting state and federal standards.
  • Serve in a leadership capacity, functioning as a project director, site supervisor, or section leader with responsibility for supervision of lower-level professional and technical staff.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant field experience in conducting archaeological field and laboratory investigations in the Eastern Woodlands cultural area.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete projects and reports in a timely and competent manner.
  • Basic familiarity with Eastern Woodlands archaeological cultural history, Illinois archaeological cultural history, and research agendas.
  • Familiarity with Federal and State of Illinois historic preservation and burial laws and regulations.
  • Effective personal relations, communication, organizational, and leadership skills, and attention to detail.
  • A professional demeanor in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities, with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency with commonly-employed software and database programs.
  • Prior experience with archaeological excavation and analysis in transportation archaeology preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Ability to complete projects and reports in a timely and competent manner.
