Visiting Assistant Professor - Computer Science

The Computer Science Department within the College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering at the University at Albany, SUNY, is seeking applicants for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Computer Science for the 2026-2027 academic year, with the possibility of renewal for AY27-28.

About the Role

The successful candidate is expected to develop an externally funded research program in computer science. Faculty are expected to provide service to the College and to their home departments and programs by participating in governance as well as providing professional service to the community and their disciplines. The successful applicant will actively mentor undergraduate and graduate students, including underserved and historically underrepresented students, and participate in pipeline programs to build a diverse and representative student population. The applicant must also participate in research tied to their interests and expertise with faculty in other departments at UAlbany. Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to, Software Engineering.

Responsibilities

• Teach 2-4 classes per year in computer science and software engineering at the undergraduate and graduate levels
• Conduct research, including supervision of PhD students and postdoctoral scholars
• Participate in curriculum development
• Provide service to the CS department, CNSE, and UAlbany by attending departmental meetings and engaging in service activities such as student recruitment and outreach
• Mentor undergraduate and graduate students, including those from underserved and historically underrepresented groups

Requirements

• PhD in Computer Science or related degree from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization by August 15, 2026
• Demonstrated ability to define and carry out internationally recognized research in the candidate's area of specialization within Computer Science
• Demonstrated teaching experience or strong potential for effectively teaching CS courses and communicating CS concepts at the undergraduate and graduate level
• Commitment to student success, diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM education
• Ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within a diverse campus community
• Demonstrated potential for research in their field, including obtaining external funding

Preferred Qualifications

• Research publications in top-tier computer science journals and conferences
• Experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant or Instructor for one or more computer science courses
• A record of obtaining research funding
• A record of student mentoring

Working Environment

• Personal office space and lab space provided to support research
• Teaching scheduled across different campus facilities, including potential evening courses after 5 pm on weekdays
• Online courses may be scheduled at the discretion of the department chair
• Occasional evening and weekend work to support events and community activities
• Travel within New York State and beyond may be necessary

Reports to the Computer Science Chair. May supervise graduate and undergraduate students working as teaching assistants, lab supervisors, and graders.
