VIE - Data Engineer (H/F) - New York
About the role
Hermès is deploying a next-generation cloud Data Platform in the United States. You will be one of the first engineers on the ground laying its technical foundations. The company is migrating its on-premise data platforms, and the VIE based in the US will own the data engineering workstreams tied to this transformation. This is not a maintenance project. You will form an operational pair with the VIE Data Analyst on the same program: one builds the foundations, the other unlocks their value — the two roles are inseparable. The role demands a rigorous, structured profile capable of building solid, lasting solutions. In a high-stakes migration program, quality and traceability of deliverables take precedence over speed of execution.
Responsibilities
Standards & best practices relay
- Act as the local relay for architecture patterns, methodologies, standards, and best practices defined by the group; ensure their adoption and compliance across all development work.
Pipeline & ingestion
- Design and develop data pipelines from US on-premise sources to Snowflake (dbt, SQL).
- Guarantee data quality, reliability, and traceability: tests, documentation, GitLab CI/CD versioning.
- Contribute to the evolution of the Data Platform schema in coordination with the Data & AI Platform teams.
- Align with the core retail data model already deployed on other geographical platforms.
Modeling & datamarts
- Model business datamarts in compliance with target data models defined by leadership.
- Structure transformation layers according to dbt standards and Hermès conventions.
- Document models and contribute to the data catalog: descriptions, lineage, conformity tests.
Migration & consistency
- Map existing data sources on local platforms and establish their correspondence with the new models.
- Identify and resolve definition or grain gaps between source and target systems.
Requirements
- Master’s degree (Bac+5) in computer science, data engineering, applied mathematics, or equivalent.
- Significant first experience (long internship, apprenticeship, or first mission) in data engineering or analytics engineering.
- Advanced SQL and relational modeling best practices (Star/Snowflake schema).
- dbt (Core or Cloud): models, tests, documentation, macros.
- Snowflake or equivalent cloud data warehouse (BigQuery, Redshift).
- GitLab CI/CD: versioning and continuous integration practices.
- Knowledge of Power BI or another BI tool is a plus.
- Rigor, strong verbal communication, proactivity.
- Professional fluency in English (written and spoken) required; French is an asset.
Benefits
- Immersion in a modern data environment on a real, large-scale case at an international luxury house.
- Operational pairing with a VIE Data Analyst on the same program from day one: you build the foundations, they unlock the value.
- Direct collaboration with data and business teams in an international Paris/US context, with strong exposure to both work cultures.
- Based in the United States within a strongly entrepreneurial culture: real autonomy, direct stakeholders, fast decisions — you are expected to take positions, not wait for approvals.
VIE Eligibility
Candidates must meet all five conditions for the Volontariat International en Entreprise (VIE) program:
- Be between 18 and 28 years old at the date of registration; departure must occur no later than the day before your 29th birthday (no exceptions).
- Be a French citizen or a national of a European Economic Area country.
- Be in compliance with national service obligations (Defense and Citizenship Day).
- Enjoy full civic rights (right to vote, clean criminal record).
- Meet the physical aptitude conditions required for equivalent activities in the host organization.
