About the role

The Vice President of Quality and Patient Safety, reporting to the Chief Strategy Officer and General Counsel, provides leadership and is accountable for the quality assessment and performance improvement (QAPI) programs in accordance with the organization’s mission, vision, values, and strategic goals. This position develops, oversees, and analyzes the QAPI programs to ensure facilities provide resident-centered, high-quality, safe, effective, efficient, timely, and equitable care. The role provides trends, analysis, and advice to other department heads to develop organizational strategic goals for quality improvement and risk mitigation, working with all members of leadership to achieve optimal resident care.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the development and implementation of the organization’s quality assessment and performance improvement (QAPI) programs in alignment with regulatory requirements and the organization’s strategy.
  • Develops, monitors, trends, and analyzes clinical quality targets and metrics, and designs plans to address gaps using research-based, industry-accepted quality improvement methods and resources.
  • Reports on trends and analyses of performance on clinical quality and patient safety metrics.
  • Works with other department leaders to create a culture of quality improvement and safety.
  • Develops short- and long-term strategic plans regarding quality improvement, root cause analysis, and patient safety, ensuring alignment with patient needs, regulatory requirements, and industry-accepted best practices.
  • Leverages and evaluates healthcare technology and/or clinical information management systems to optimize quality improvement and patient care.
  • Advises the clinical and operations teams on establishing key performance indicators and clinical goals to improve quality and manage risk.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with other executives, department heads, clinical team members, and staff to ensure effective, proactive, and ongoing communication.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and revision of policies and procedures to accomplish the organization’s quality and risk management initiatives.
  • Advises on, and participates in, Joint Commission, state, and any other survey responses.
  • Maintains current knowledge of all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards as they relate to long-term care QAPI and survey requirements.
  • Ensures understanding and adherence to the organization's Code of Conduct and compliance with policies, regulations, and laws applicable to the organization’s business.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Preference given to those with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing (BSN/MSN), master’s degree in social work (MSW), or a registered nurse (RN) or social work license (LCSW) in a state where at least one facility is located.
  • Preference given to those with a master’s degree in a healthcare-related field or enterprise risk management.
  • Minimum of 6 years’ experience working in the healthcare industry, with preference given to those with experience in long-term care.
  • Previous experience in healthcare QAPI or risk management, with preference given to those who have 4 years of progressively responsible leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of the long-term care industry with familiarity of state and federal regulations and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience in change management, root cause analyses, clinical policy and procedure development, and quality improvement methods.
  • Proven track record of effectively leading a performance- and outcomes-based program and staff.

Skills

  • Exceptional leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and healthcare management software.
  • Strong strategic and analytical orientation with the ability to translate strategy and vision into tangible goals and programs.
  • Expertise in Quality Assessment & Performance Improvement (QAPI): leading quality improvement initiatives, monitoring clinical outcomes, and driving continuous performance improvement.
  • Expertise in Patient Safety & Risk Management: overseeing patient safety programs, conducting root cause analyses, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Expertise in Executive Leadership & Strategic Planning: developing strategic quality initiatives, leading cross-functional teams, and aligning organizational goals with quality outcomes.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel to skilled nursing facilities.
  • Walking, reaching, bending, lifting, extended sitting, grasping, fine hand coordination, pushing and pulling, with or without the aid of mechanical devices.
  • Ability to distinguish smells and temperatures.
  • Limited potential for exposure to environmental hazards.
  • Understanding and adherence to company safety standards and protocols required.
  • Must meet all health requirements as needed.
