Vice President - Industry

AAMI’s mission is to ensure the safe and effective use of healthcare technology through the development, adoption, and application of voluntary consensus standards and other consensus-based guidance, as well as related education, training, certifications, events, and products. The VP of Industry is a critical role responsible for aligning AAMI’s work with the needs of medical device manufacturers and regulatory agency stakeholders. This in-person senior role, located in Arlington, VA, requires regular on-site presence and reports to the Chief Growth Officer.

About the role

As part subject matter expert, part business development leader, and part business strategist, this role serves as a key member of the AAMI Leadership Team (LT). The VP of Industry will support AAMI’s industry and regulatory stakeholders in collaboration with all service areas, including standards development, training, events, and media. The position follows a hybrid work schedule with a mix of onsite days in the Arlington office and local telework days.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive strategies to support the needs of medical device manufacturers and regulatory agencies, driving mission-focused, financially sustainable growth.
  • Work closely with the VP of Standards to ensure the health and viability of the industry-focused standards portfolio by identifying gaps and opportunities for new work items.
  • Serve as an organizational ambassador to identify and pursue new members, partners, and alliances within the medical device industry.
  • Assess existing products and services for industry and regulatory customers (standards, publications, educational offerings, events, etc.) and identify new needed products and services.
  • Build a demand pipeline for AAMI products and services by generating sales leads, qualifying prospects, and closing—or assisting in closing—revenue-producing deals.
  • Serve as the internal subject-matter expert and voice of the customer, conducting market research and analysis to understand needs, industry trends, and the competitive landscape.
  • Collaborate with product development and management teams to ensure offerings meet the unique needs of medical device manufacturers and regulators.
  • Work closely with the marketing/sales team to develop and execute strategies, provide market insights, and support revenue targets.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key members, industry partners, and stakeholders in the medical device sector.
  • Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of vertical market initiatives and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Serve as a leader and mentor across the AAMI organization, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
  • Contribute to hands-on tasks as needed to support AAMI’s success in a small, nimble organization.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressively increasing experience in the medical devices area, preferably within a medical device manufacturer or related regulatory body, with a focus on quality, risk, and/or standards.
  • Demonstrated history of working on and motivating high-performing, cross-functional teams and fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Proven track record of partnering effectively across matrixed environments for growth and innovation.
  • Strong understanding of medical device standards, preferably with direct experience in standards development and/or medical device regulation.
  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in market research tools and software.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in relevant areas (e.g., MBA or relevant Master’s degree) and/or relevant certifications (e.g., SES, ASQ quality certifications, CAE, PMP).
  • Demonstrated success as a senior individual contributor or manager in a national non-profit, military, established commercial enterprise, or government organization.
  • Proven history of supporting, facilitating, and guiding volunteer committees, working groups, or panels.
  • Demonstrated track record of growing programs and organizations and achieving growth targets.
  • Familiarity with associations in the medical device industry.
  • Strong strategic, analytical, and organizational skills, with the ability to translate vision into execution.
  • High ethical standards and strong negotiating skills, with the ability to take prudent risks.
  • Ability to interpret and leverage data analytics and business intelligence tools for business planning, forecasting, and operational decisions.
  • Strong collaboration skills, intellectual curiosity, and a growth mindset.
  • Demonstrated experience building or scaling a business, including responsibility for P&L.

Schedule

  • Hybrid work schedule: two or more days weekly in the Arlington, VA office, with flexibility to increase onsite days based on mission/business needs.
  • Domestic travel required (approximately 15 trips annually, occasionally more), with occasional international travel.
  • Evening/weekend work may be required to support AAMI events, deadlines, or special initiatives.

Working Conditions

This position is located in Arlington, VA, and requires the successful candidate to reside in the immediate DMV area for rapid access to the office. Preference will be given to local candidates within commuting distance. Working conditions are normal for an office environment.
