The Department of Medicine at Boston Medical Center and Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine is seeking a Vice Chair of Research, Basic & Translational Science to provide strategic leadership for its discovery research enterprise. This individual will guide the development and execution of a department-wide vision that advances high-impact basic and translational science, strengthens national competitiveness, and accelerates the translation of scientific discoveries into clinical innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Guide the development and execution of a department-wide vision that advances high-impact basic and translational science, strengthens national competitiveness, and accelerates the translation of scientific discoveries into clinical innovation.
  • Ensure alignment across the full research continuum—from bench to bedside to population health.
  • Identify emerging scientific opportunities and drive strategic investments in faculty, infrastructure, and technology.
  • Play a central role in expanding externally funded research, enhancing laboratory and core infrastructure, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration in partnership with leadership across the School of Medicine.
  • Recruit, mentor, and retain top-tier investigators while shaping faculty development pathways and overseeing an equitable research compensation strategy that incentivizes productivity and innovation.
  • Build and support highly successful research teams.
  • Promote inclusive excellence, support team science, and represent the Department in institutional governance, helping to elevate the academic and research profile of the organization.

Requirements

  • MD, PhD, or equivalent
  • Associate of Full Professor Rank
  • Experience in Basic and Translational Sciences required

  • Track record of external funding, national recognition, and a credible publication record.
  • Track record of building highly successful teams.
  • Ability to promote inclusive excellence, support team science, and represent the Department in institutional governance.

Skills
