VFD Specialist - Mechanical Technologies
About the role
The VFD Specialist supports the application, sale, training on, and troubleshooting of ABB HVAC VFDs. Mechanical Technologies, along with ABB, is a market leader in HVAC VFDs, and our Drive Specialists are instrumental in maintaining that position. We are seeking a person who can act not only as a subject matter expert on ABB VFDs but also demonstrate familiarity with other related HVAC equipment and systems.
Responsibilities
- Provide over-the-phone and email troubleshooting for end-users, contractors, and the in-house service team as the primary escalation contact.
- Offer onsite troubleshooting assistance when necessary; use metering equipment for VFDs and control systems.
- Train the service team in traditional VFD start-ups and troubleshooting; maintain and provide training to owners and contractors, ranging from 30 minutes to a full day.
- Develop and support in-house demos for engineer/customer visits.
- Assist inside/outside salespeople in identifying the correct VFD for applications, and review specifications with salespeople.
- Perform harmonic calculations and promote effective mitigation strategies.
- Identify MRO VFD opportunities and support creating proactive replacement strategies with the sales team.
- Support local specifying engineers as a subject matter expert on VFDs; participate in and present at local ASHRAE chapter meetings.
- Stay knowledgeable about local rebate programs for VFDs; participate in local trade shows.
- Stay informed on industry trends and discuss HVAC and VFDs knowledgeably, including comparisons with non-ABB products.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred) or technical school training (Associate's degree) with a relevant focus, or similar military technical training.
- At least 3-5 years of hands-on support of HVAC or similar equipment involving VFDs.
- An active electrical license or equivalent experience (military service) is a plus.
Qualifications
Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Skills
- Strong technical knowledge of VFDs, HVAC systems, and protocols (BACnet).
- Implement and support training initiatives; communicate clearly in groups and one-on-one.
- Test and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical systems; work on electrical equipment up to 600 VAC safely.
- Read and understand electrical schematics and one-line diagrams.

Pay
$100,000-$120,000/yr with flexibility based on experience and skills.
