Veterinary Technician or Assistant - Avian/Exotics at Angell West

About the role

This full-time position (40 hours per week, 10:00 am–8:30 pm with rotating weekends and holidays) provides technical support to our Avian/Exotics Veterinarian at MSPCA‑Angell West in Waltham. The role involves assisting with case management and technical procedures for avian and exotic patients, as well as communicating with clients and referring veterinarians. It offers the opportunity to practice in an intimate, client‑focused setting while leveraging the resources of the larger MSPCA‑Angell Boston hospital. Responsibilities

• Assist with case management and technical procedures for avian/exotic patients
• Perform avian/exotic‑specific technical skills: venipuncture, IV catheter placement, anesthesia, gavage feeding, medication administration, and critical care
• Communicate with clients and referring veterinarians
• Support the Avian/Exotics Veterinarian in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment

Requirements

• Experience: Minimum 1 year as a Veterinary Assistant in a fast‑paced animal clinic, wildlife sanctuary, or animal hospital
• Certification (for Technician role): Must be a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT)
• Education (preferred): Associate’s degree or higher in Veterinary Technology or related field
• Skills: Previous animal handling experience; proficiency in avian/exotic venipuncture, IV catheter placement, anesthesia, gavage feeding, medication administration, and critical care

Qualifications

• Veterinary Assistant: 1+ year relevant experience; starting pay $22–$27/hour
• Certified Veterinary Technician: Active CVT credential; starting pay $25–$30/hour plus a $5,000 sign‑on bonus
• Candidates with additional experience or credentials may be eligible for compensation aligned with their qualifications

Compensation

• Veterinary Assistants: $22–$27 per hour
• Certified Veterinary Technicians: $25–$30 per hour + $5,000 sign‑on bonus

Schedule

Full‑time, 40 hours per week; shift runs 10:00 am–8:30 pm with rotating weekends and holidays.
