Responsibilities
- Perform routine health care procedures and conduct animal health evaluations as needed.
- Evaluate animals within assigned area or as assigned and report abnormal findings to the Attending Veterinarian and Operations Manager.
- Provide necessary treatment as directed by the veterinarian.
- Communicate findings and plan with the responsible researcher and building husbandry supervisor.
- Document animal health abnormalities, diagnostic plan, diagnosis, treatment plan, and treatments.
- Provide veterinary technical support to researchers as per the protocol including but not limited to: euthanasia, necropsy, tissue harvest, weaning, injections, tail cutting and colony management.
- Assist in training courses on the safe and humane handling, restraint and manipulation of research animals.
- Administer the sentinel animal/colony health monitoring program and collect the necessary samples for sentinel testing.
- Maintain an inventory of technical and medical equipment and supplies, maintain and order supplies, keep records of annual equipment services.
- Maintain USDA records.
- Dispense Controlled/ non-controlled drugs and maintained drug records.
- Responsible for Post Approval Monitoring (PAM), Compliance Rounds and ATP testing.
- Responsible for maintaining the isoflurane machines.
- Maintain the cleanliness of all prep/procedure rooms and surgical areas; assist with development of standard operating procedures and guidelines; operate and use equipment and supplies according to SOP's to ensure proper bio security and safety.
- Perform husbandry duties as needed.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Associates degree. Minimum two years of relevant experience.
- Education, Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Preferred: Bachelor's degree. Minimum five years of relevant experience.
- Licenses And Certifications Required: Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) or Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or Bachelor's degree in Animal Sciences. AALAS certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or Bachelor's degree in Animal Sciences.
