Position Purpose

The Hospital Leader On Duty provides exceptional veterinary care and outstanding customer service to our full-service hospital patients and their owners. This role embodies Petco's core values by representing our mission and values to all pets and pet parents.

Essential Job Functions

  • Greet clients and patients, escort them to exam rooms, and obtain weight and vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, pain score, body condition score).
  • Collect thorough patient histories and document visits in the electronic medical record.
  • Aid veterinarians with appointments, surgeries, dentistry, and euthanasia, under supervision.
  • Perform patient restraint, collect and process laboratory samples, and administer medications as directed.
  • Answer and route telephone calls, schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results, and update records.
  • Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, assist with anesthesia, monitor patients during recovery, and prepare for hospital discharge or transfer.
  • Assist with in-hospital treatments, such as administering injectables and oral medications, performing intravenous fluid therapy, and maintaining cleanliness and hydration.
  • Train new staff members and disseminate knowledge as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized hospital environment, adhering to a scheduled cleaning routine.
  • Manage inventory ordering, scheduling, and other tasks as assigned.
  • Answer and route incoming calls, manage wait times, and ensure compliance with Petco and Vetco Total Care policies.
  • Supervise paraprofessional staff and participate in training new employees.

Nature of Supervision

The Hospital Leader On Duty reports directly to the Area Operations Manager and oversees paraprofessional staff.

Education/Experience

  • At least 1 year of previous veterinary practice experience or equivalent experience.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Compassionate and empathetic, maintaining a professional demeanor in stressful situations.
  • Effective telephone and computer skills.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and treatments, offer creative ideas, and adapt to change.

Work Environment

The majority of job duties are performed in the Veterinary Hospital. The position involves bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and standing for extended periods.
