About the role

At Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services, exceptional patient care begins behind the scenes with a dedicated team of professionals who ensure timely diagnostics and safe, accurate medication management. We are seeking a Laboratory & Pharmacy Technician to join our growing specialty and emergency hospital and play a critical role in supporting our doctors, technicians, and patients. This position supports patient care through accurate laboratory diagnostics and efficient pharmacy operations in a collaborative, fast-paced environment where your skills directly impact patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform in-house diagnostic testing, including CBCs, serum chemistries, urinalysis, coagulation testing, blood typing, crossmatching, SNAP testing, PCV/TS, and other laboratory procedures.
  • Prepare, package, label, and submit specimens for reference laboratory testing.
  • Accurately document laboratory results and enter charges into the practice management system.
  • Maintain, clean, calibrate, troubleshoot, and monitor laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Manage laboratory and pharmacy inventory, ensuring adequate supplies are available at all times.
  • Process prescription requests received by phone, email, fax, or directly from the medical team.
  • Review medical records and doctor instructions to accurately prepare and dispense medications.
  • Coordinate prescription orders with outside pharmacies as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with veterinarians, technicians, clients, and referral partners regarding laboratory results, prescription questions, and refill requests.
  • Monitor laboratory and pharmacy email inboxes and respond promptly to requests.
  • Maintain compliance with hospital protocols, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with training team members on laboratory and pharmacy procedures.
  • Contribute to a clean, organized, and collaborative work environment.

Requirements

  • Certified Veterinary Technician (LVT/CVT/RVT) preferred; equivalent veterinary experience considered.
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in a veterinary hospital, specialty practice, or diagnostic laboratory preferred.
  • Working knowledge of veterinary laboratory procedures and common veterinary medications.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Proficient with veterinary practice management software and computer systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to remain calm, efficient, and accurate in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Ability to stand, bend, lift, and perform the physical demands of a veterinary hospital setting.

Pay

Competitive pay: $20 to $28/hour, commensurate with experience.
