Veterinary Extern - General Practice
About the role
An externship experience at May Veterinary Clinic will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in various aspects of veterinary practice.
Responsibilities
- Gain experience in gathering patient histories
- Perform physical exams
- Create treatment plans
- Diagnose and perform diagnostics
- Provide dental services
- Assist or perform surgical procedures
- Manage medical cases
- Practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients
Requirements
Veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships. Students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. For details on the stipend program, click HERE.
Qualifications
Students must have completed prerequisite coursework and be enrolled in a veterinary program. No prior experience is necessary.
Skills
Strong communication skills, ability to work independently, and a passion for animal care are essential.

Compensation details are provided during the hiring process and vary based on location.
Schedule
Most externship experiences at May Veterinary Clinic range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules.
