About the role

Powell Animal Hospital is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to join our team. This position offers a competitive starting salary of $16 - $18/hour, with potential for negotiation based on experience and credentials. Responsibilities

  • Provide end-to-end care for patients, including outpatient treatments, laboratory tests, and support services like admitting and discharging patients.
  • Support veterinarians and the medical team to enhance productivity and maintain positive patient flow.
  • Safely restrain patients and assist with exams and procedures.
  • Administer medications and treatments as directed.
  • Absorb and relay relevant health history and information from clients.
  • Maintain medical charts and perform tasks such as venipuncture, catheter placement, anesthesia monitoring, radiographs, and lab work.
  • Assist with hospitalized patient care, including monitoring and comfort measures.
  • Support surgical and dental procedures, including dental radiographs.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough medical records.
  • Perform in-house lab testing and prepare samples for reference labs.
  • Take and assist with diagnostic radiographs (including positioning and safety).
  • Assist with surgical prep, sterile set-up, and patient recovery.
  • Monitor anesthesia and maintain patient safety.
  • Support post-operative care, including pain management, monitoring, and discharge education.
  • Communicate clearly with clients regarding treatment plans, estimates, and next steps.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and restocking of exam rooms and treatment areas.
  • Follow infection control and safety protocols.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years of clinical experience.
  • Strong technical skills including venipuncture, catheter placement, anesthesia monitoring, radiographs, and lab work.

  • Willingness and ability to support veterinarians to ensure quality veterinary care, advocate for pets, and educate clients.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with clients regarding treatment plans, estimates, and next steps.
  • Willingness and ability to support surgical and dental procedures, including dental radiographs.
  • Willingness and ability to support hospitalized patient care, including monitoring and comfort measures.
  • Willingness and ability to support post-operative care, including pain management, monitoring, and discharge education.
  • Willingness and ability to follow infection control and safety protocols.

Skills
