About the role

Malaherd Veterinary Clinic is seeking a Veterinary Medical Director to lead their established small animal practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This role offers the opportunity to practice high-quality medicine while mentoring colleagues, elevating clinical standards, and shaping the future of a growing hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the hospital's medical vision and clinical standards
  • Maintain an active clinical caseload in small animal medicine and surgery
  • Mentor and support associate veterinarians
  • Foster a collaborative, positive, and growth-oriented culture
  • Partner with hospital leadership on strategic initiatives and hospital development
  • Support medical quality assurance and best-practice protocols
  • Encourage continuing education and professional development
  • Help recruit, develop, and retain exceptional veterinary talent
  • Champion outstanding patient care and client communication

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD) degree from an AVMA-accredited college of veterinary medicine (or equivalent certification for international graduates)
  • Active New Mexico veterinary license in good standing, or ability to obtain licensure prior to start date
  • Successful completion of the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE)
  • Minimum 5+ years of clinical experience in small animal medicine, surgery, and preventive care
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to practicing high-quality, evidence-based veterinary medicine
  • Able to mentor and develop veterinarians and support staff
  • Excellent diagnostic, medical, and surgical skills
  • Passion for team development, hospital growth, and patient care excellence

Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a Veterinary Medical Director, Chief of Staff, Lead Veterinarian, or Medical Lead
  • Experience managing medical quality standards and clinical protocols
  • Interest in veterinarian mentorship and leadership development
  • Experience with hospital growth initiatives and operational collaboration
  • Proficiency with advanced diagnostics, digital radiography, dental radiography, and ultrasound
  • Interest in fostering a positive, high-performing hospital culture
