About the role

Operates passenger buses (23 or more passengers) to transport students, consumers, residents, and personnel to and from Mount Vernon Developmental Center for various activities, including athletic events, educational programs, training, field trips, chartered events, medical appointments, and other institutional functions.

Operates station wagons, mini-buses, vans, or trucks to transport personnel, materials, and supplies. Operates maintenance equipment such as tractors, snowplows, and lawn mowers to assist in snow removal or lawn maintenance. Performs deliveries of supplies and food for departments like the kitchen, storeroom, nursing, FedEx, UPS, OPI, Central Farm, and other campus locations. Picks up hazardous items, laundry, food carts, and mail as requested. Assists in training new employees in vehicle operation, including defensive driving and wheelchair/stretcher securement.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, service, and maintain vehicles, including checking fluids, tires, wipers, and safety features.
  • Perform vehicle inspections before driving and report any deficiencies.
  • Complete motor vehicle reports, including trip fuel, mileage, and maintenance inspections.
  • Assist in sidewalk snow removal and lawn maintenance as needed.
  • Attend required training and in-services, such as first aid, CPR, and fire safety.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties, including waxing vehicles, cleaning interiors, maintaining the shop/work area, and inventorying motor vehicle parts, supplies, and fuel.
  • Assist supervisors in training new employees on safe driving practices, including state driving codes, air brake operation, and vehicle maintenance.

Requirements

  • Formal education in arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Three months of training or experience operating a passenger bus or van.
  • Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for the size and type of motorized equipment operated, as regulated by Ohio Revised Code Sections 4506.01 and 4506.12.

  • Equipment operations (e.g., buses, vans, tractors, snowplows, lawn mowers).
  • Safe driving practices, including knowledge of state driving codes and air brake operation.
  • Vehicle maintenance and inspection.
  • Training and supervising new employees in defensive driving and equipment use.
  • Flexibility to perform a variety of tasks, including deliveries, maintenance, and administrative duties.

Pay

$22.29–$24.63 per hour.

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours per week.

Work location: Mount Vernon Developmental Center, Knox County, Ohio.
