Vehicle Equipment Technician I

Job Summary

This is mechanical work at the apprenticeship level. A mechanic in this classification is expected to do general repairs on passenger cars and light and heavy-duty trucks.

Job Duties

• On Call towing light and heavy-duty city-owned vehicles/equipment
• Performs minor tune-ups, repairs, and/or replaces brake linings, wheel bearings, changes lights and fuses, and all other repairs
• Using electronic diagnostic equipment, traces out and repairs any vehicle system, including electrical/electronic, carburetor/fuel injection, hydraulic/pneumatic heat and air conditioning, and any other major repair that requires the experience of an accredited gasoline/diesel mechanic
• Aids Vehicle Technician II on more extensive repairs, working as a helper
• Must be proficient in computer technology and terminology to repair both light and heavy-duty vehicles
• Must be able to read and interpret computer and electrical schematics to repair light and heavy vehicles
• Knowledge on how to replace engines and transmissions, as well as repair for light-duty Vehicles
• Works on weekends during summer months – 1 -2 times a month
• During the weekend work, have off on Thursday and Friday leading up to the weekend
• Available to report to work in emergency weather situations

Qualifications

• Less than high school education and completion of a formal apprenticeship as an automotive services mechanic; or completion of high school or GED and two (2) years of full-time experience in the servicing, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles and motor equipment
• Candidates who do not meet the above qualifications but possess the mechanical aptitude and ambition to learn and grow into the role may still be considered for this position

Other Qualifications

• Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements, preferred or must be able to obtain a CDL with Class A endorsement within one (1) year of employment
• Knowledge in the use of tools and computers used in automotive repair business; and ability to diagnose and correct routine motor vehicle malfunctions

• Language skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
• Reasoning ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
