Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician I (61033638)

Responsibilities

• Assists other mechanics with routine maintenance and general repairs to heavy equipment and engines.
• Performs preventive maintenance service (up to and including level III) on state equipment (SCDOT Key Series 001 through 011).
• Troubleshoots vehicle electrical problems on state equipment (SCDOT Key Series 001 through 011) and trains in the use of diagnostic equipment and repair manuals.
• Checks fuel, water, and lubricating oil levels to ensure proper servicing of engines and equipment.
• Performs small engine repairs on state equipment of simple or medium complexity (e.g., chain saws, weed eaters).
• Performs light brake repairs on state equipment (SCDOT Key Series 001 through 011) and assists with more complex repairs, including conventional brake systems, carburetors, and fuel injection systems.
• Makes repairs to exhaust systems, including routine replacement of mufflers and tailpipes.
• Installs and repairs inclement weather equipment (e.g., snow plows, sand/salt spreaders).
• Assists with shop operations during emergencies (e.g., snow and ice, hurricanes) and may be on call for after-hours emergencies.
• Helps maintain shop cleanliness and organization.
• Attends job-related training as scheduled by SCDOT and supervisor.

Requirements

• Six (6) months of directly related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires working in a large garage setting and may involve uncomfortable positions for extended periods. May be required to work outside normal work schedules, especially during inclement weather or departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outdoor environments in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease.
