Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled mechanical repairs to electrical and hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, and small equipment (chainsaws, weed eaters).
  • Handles body work related to accidents or wear and tear, tire repairs, field service calls, and A/C repairs.
  • Conducts preventative maintenance and utilizes diagnostic equipment to diagnose mechanical failures.
  • Diagnoses repairs or replacement of parts on all diesel-powered equipment assigned to SCDOT.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic motors, pumps, cylinders, mowing equipment, tractors, motor-graders, rollers, and AMZ machines.
  • Performs welding and fabrication, including electric and gas welding, and modifies equipment to improve production.
  • Ensures shop safety and cleanliness of the automotive shop and surrounding areas, including proper storage and disposal of hazardous waste and materials per DHEC regulations.
  • Performs service calls at field work sites as needed.
  • Assists in maintenance operations during emergencies (e.g., inclement weather) by providing mechanical support.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • One and one-half (1.5) years of work experience in job duties directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
  • Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirements

  • Involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in uncomfortable positions for long periods.
  • May require working outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather or emergencies.
  • Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
