Variant Scientist - Cytogenetics

About the role

Vanderbilt University Medical Center is located in Nashville, Tennessee, and operates globally. The Cytogenetics position involves interpreting and classifying variants identified by next generation sequencing, Sanger sequencing, and/or copy number analysis. The VSII can perform primary analysis on most whole exome sequencing and associated panels (germline testing) or myeloid panels (somatic testing), with oversight from faculty. Responsibilities include quality control, curation of variants and genes for clinical relevance, recognizing complex cases, assisting with testing maintenance, new test development, and training.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient-focused care in a clinical setting through accurate classification of variants identified by various techniques.
• Utilize a variety of software tools to analyze clinical molecular data.
• Read and interpret scientific literature and curate variants, genes, and diseases for scientific and clinical relevance.
• Summarize genetic test results to generate high quality variant summaries and reports.
• Participate in laboratory quality control, clinical review, and panel development meetings to support improvements for current assays and processes.
• Absorb and apply new knowledge and skills to maintain competency in the field.

Requirements

• Master's degree in a relevant field.
• Experience in next generation sequencing, Sanger sequencing, and/or copy number analysis.
• Ability to analyze and interpret scientific literature.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $85,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.

Schedule

This position is full-time and works a standard 40-hour week.
