About the role
Provide scheduled transportation to individuals of all ages for medical appointments, recreational activities, and shopping by operating a passenger van on a demand-response system.
Responsibilities
- Operate gasoline or diesel powered multi-passenger vehicles to transport passengers safely, adhering to all MDT rules and regulations.
- Conduct pre-trip vehicle inspections to ensure operational and safety equipment is in working condition; complete daily van inspection forms and report malfunctions or needed repairs to the scheduler.
- Prepare and submit reports including the number of passengers or trips, trip purpose, mileage, and other required details.
- Notify scheduler if a rider does not show; submit trip sheets, fuel receipts, and payments daily, and inspection sheets weekly.
- Read maps and follow written and verbal geographic directions.
- Comply with all traffic regulations to operate vehicles safely and courteously; report delays, accidents, or other traffic situations to the proper agency or scheduler.
- Pick up and drop off passengers at scheduled locations, adhering to time schedules.
- Provide passengers with directions and information about van schedules, facilities, and operations.
- Understand and communicate the first-come, first-served system to passengers; serve as a liaison between passengers and the scheduler.
- Establish rapport with passengers and provide assistance, including operating wheelchair lifts and securement devices, assisting with boarding and deboarding, and aiding with transfers and small packages.
- Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilation for passenger comfort; clean the van after each trip.
- Maneuver wheelchairs on and off ramps, up curbs, and over thresholds.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive or personal information.
- Operate telephone and cell phone for communication with the scheduler.
- Maintain knowledge of first-aid procedures and CPR; ensure passenger safety and order during trips.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 1 to 3 years of experience operating a passenger van, preferably in a skilled-care nursing home environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Montana driver’s license and proof of insurability.
- Successfully pass the GCMC pre-employment driving test, DOT pre-employment drug test, and recurring random drug tests.
- Pass criminal and sexual or violent offender background checks.
- Meet all health requirements required by law.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work well under pressure, establish priorities, and adapt to change.
- Ability to work with elderly patients and maintain a self-motivated, creative, and positive personality.
- Strong organizational skills, assertiveness, patience, and conscientiousness.
- Professional appearance and ability to work with staff, family members, and the community.
- Availability for training, including overnight out-of-town events, and flexibility in working hours, including weekends and evenings.
Skills
- Ability to balance and maintain physical equilibrium to prevent falls or dropping objects.
- Able to stand, sit, walk, and use stairs for extended periods.
- Able to reach, stoop, kneel, push/pull, lift, and crouch.
- Fine motor skills for manipulating small objects and operating relevant equipment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds using appropriate techniques.
- Sensory abilities including feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling, and speaking.
- Manual dexterity for operating equipment.

Nature of Work
This position operates a passenger van and assists residents and patients in indoor and outdoor environments during normal business hours. Work may occasionally extend beyond regular hours to meet resident or patient needs. The role involves handling sensitive information, requiring strict confidentiality.
