Utility Worker I - Engineering - Inflow and Infiltration

About the Role

This is an entry-level position focused on manual labor for the repair and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection infrastructure. The role emphasizes hands-on crew work while learning technical functions.

Responsibilities

  • Gather tools and equipment needed for work activities; transport materials, tools, and supplies.
  • Clean and wash equipment and tools; perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs; notify supervisor of needed equipment replacements or repairs.
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as cameras, shovels, sharpshooters, probing rods, jet hoses, jackhammers, pipe saws, chainsaws, hand tools, hatchets, machetes, post hole diggers, trash pumps, and hand pumps.
  • Adhere to established safety procedures, including monitoring the work environment, using safety equipment, directing traffic, and placing markers, signs, and cones around work sites.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure safety.
  • Provide emergency coverage and work standby shifts as required.
  • Assist in documenting manhole locations using GPS equipment.
  • Assist in condition assessments of sewer infrastructure, including visual and electronic measurements, smoke testing, and entering manholes to place or remove flow meters and CCTV equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in construction, infrastructure maintenance, or a related field preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License preferred.
  • Must obtain and maintain the following certifications within nine months of hire: Confined Space Entry, Trenching and Excavation, and Flagger.

Physical Abilities

  • Ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull moderately heavy objects (20–50 pounds); occasionally handle heavier objects (up to 100 pounds).
  • Perceive and discriminate colors, odors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.
  • Communicate orally.

Environmental Factors

  • Exposure to adverse conditions, including dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, extreme temperatures, and loud noises.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous materials, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, falling objects, electric currents, traffic hazards, animal/wildlife attacks, toxic agents, violence, disease, or explosive environments.
