We are looking for a Utility Worker specializing in Boiler & Refrigeration (B&R) to perform B&R Operator functions and duties, maintain fire systems, and handle maintenance activities within the B&R Department.
About the Role
The B&R Utility is responsible for stepping into B&R Operator roles as needed, maintaining fire systems, and performing maintenance tasks including installation, repair, troubleshooting, and daily preventive maintenance (PMs). This role also involves training department personnel on refrigeration, boiler systems, and fire systems, as well as handling project work within the B&R department.
Responsibilities
- Work variable shifts to cover B&R Operator absences and perform maintenance on fire systems and other B&R equipment.
- Perform PM and maintenance work on fire equipment, including replacing sprinkler heads, piping, inspecting extinguishers, administering flow tests, and maintaining fire pumps while adhering to safety practices.
- Complete fire system impairments and comply with all fire protection inspection requirements, including quarterly and yearly checks and related paperwork.
- Assist with daily B&R workload, replacing faulty mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical components.
- Understand and execute testing procedures on boilers, water softeners, RO units, condensers, and refrigeration systems, ensuring proper reports and records are maintained.
- Document work and PMs in the computerized maintenance system (CMMS), logging daily events and machine conditions.
- Operate and maintain forklifts and scissor-lifts, and own required job-specific tools.
- Perform maintenance and repairs on B&R equipment, including belts, sprockets, bearings, chains, motors, and pumps, following safety protocols.
- Operate, install, and repair conveyors, fans, piping, and related B&R equipment.
- Diagnose and repair malfunctioning apparatus such as igniters, gearboxes, motors, and shaft bearings.
- Use technical tools and instruments to operate, repair, and adjust boiler and ammonia refrigeration systems.
- Fabricate small jobs, including taking dimensions, layout design, cutting, shearing, welding, and maintaining structural integrity.
- Perform welding and pipe installation, including Stick, Tig, and Mig welding.
- Participate in departmental training on pump repair, bearing replacement, gear drive repair, and boiler/refrigeration operations.
- Assist in training plant personnel on B&R equipment and fire systems.
- Conduct fire system checks and participate in audits as required.
- Perform basic electrical work on panels and fire systems related to B&R.
- Attend annual departmental and job-specific training, as well as monthly informational meetings.
- Communicate problems or changes in the work environment to appropriate personnel.
- Adhere to quality processes, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and 5S principles.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area and follow environmental and safety regulations.
- Actively participate in Behavioral Observation Safety (BOS), RADAR programs, and continuous improvement processes.
- Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and promote a strong teamwork environment.
Requirements
- Four years of related experience and/or training in boilers, refrigeration, and related systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must provide documentation of experience in the related field.
- Must pass ammonia and refrigeration job skills tests.
- Must demonstrate mechanical aptitude with a passing score on the mechanical job skills test.
Skills
- Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write accurate and complete reports, logs, and simple documents. Ability to communicate effectively and participate in discussions.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform calculations involving percentages, area, circumference, volume, fractions, decimals, and basic algebra/geometry for fabrication, measurements, and data interpretation.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense, identify problems, extract information, and use logic to draw conclusions based on facts and principles.
Pay
Starting at $34.32 USD hourly, with bonus eligibility and hourly pay differentials for applicable shifts.
