About the role
Utility Technician Apprentice, under the general supervision of the Crew Leader, installs, repairs, and maintains water and wastewater infrastructure, operating related equipment and ensuring compliance with safety and traffic control standards.
Responsibilities
- Repairs water and wastewater lines; cleans and inspects pipes; installs repair parts and evaluates effectiveness of repair
- Installs water and wastewater infrastructure including, but not limited to, mains, services, and laterals; taps and meters; valves; manholes; air relief valves; fire hydrants; cleanouts, etc.
- Assists in excavation; operates air hammer to break rock and asphalt; uses pick and shovel to remove dirt and rock from excavations; uses probe to locate pipes
- Cleans wastewater lines; uses hand and/or machine rods to unclog or clean mains & laterals
- Performs line locates of water and wastewater infrastructure in accordance with Texas One Call laws
- Cleans & maintains tools and equipment
- Drives various trucks, primarily dump trucks, to haul material related to the repair and installation of water and wastewater infrastructure
- Loads, unloads, and operates dump trucks and other heavy equipment
- Installs traffic control in strict accordance with state and federal manuals of traffic control devices
- Follows City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
- Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
Qualifications
- Class A CDL Permit within six (6) months; Class A CDL License within eight (8) months; Tanker Endorsement within one (1) year of hire
- TCEQ Licenses D Water OR Collection I within six (6) months; D Water AND Collection I within one (1) year
